IT'S ALL OR NOTHING
The Damage Report - End of Week #19

NOTE: this is a post that is made to give a summary of events that has happened at DLSU-D during the finished week.

The first week of a new semester has finished. A New schedule to adapt to, a few new faces, a few missing faces, more focus and concentration in different areas, and just about a little bit of everything else.

I've been posting this past week amidst the new schedules and challenges that await, so you can always find a more detailed report in the previous entries made this past week.

LAST SUNDAY

Instead of last sem's Monday mornings, I now move into La Salle on Sunday night. And that's how my 2nd Semester began with last sunday spending it reuniting with dorm mates from last semester and sweeping dust off the floors and desks.

We treated ourselves to pizza and I moved in almost perfectly until I forgot to bring my pillow, matress, and blanket. Luckily Joel let me borrow an extra pillow and matress, but I had to spend more than half the rest of the week without a blanket and exposed to the cold of November DasmariƱas.

LAST MONDAY

It was the start of the 2nd Semester and I was excited to see my classmates again. However, we already decreased in numbers on the first day. It was a horrifying thought that a class of nearly 50 would become 30 something.

Actually, many thought that there wearn't any classes on Monday because it was the word around. And in fact, only three have decreased from the first day of school last Semester. They would be Ricky from long ago, Erian, and Jeremy.

In three subjects, only one professor showed up. Only our Career Pathing teacher, AB Com faculty Ms. Mahsa Sigari, gave out a few words on our first day. For General Chemistry and Intensive English, which are Monday-only subjects, we'll have to wait for next Monday.

LAST TUESDAY

The kakaibang schedule of Tuesday (and Thursday) changed the style of breaks. Compared to last semester where our 1 1/2 hour breaks would be at Brejanah Cafe or just at the Kubo, we were now exposed to a 3-hour break in the morning.

I joined Ate Angge and a few others to go to their house down the road here in DasmariƱas. To me, it was a total spontaneous event. I had pictured my morning to be in the Library, HF Office, or in my dorm... and never expected to be out of the campus watching nice movies with classmates.

Communication Arts and Skills 1 was the first class, led by Eric's old HS teacher, Mr. Mansuerto. That class would end at 8:30AM and our next class would be Sociology at 11:30AM.

When we'd return from Ate Angge's (Tuesday was "Save the last dance", and Thursday was "Moulin Rouge") we'd arrive to Sociology which would end at 1:00PM. We would have a one-hour break before we'd proceed with NSTP-CWTSP at the SBC Building, 2nd floor and terrace-room (SBC 203).

The two professors are Ms. Cristina and Ms. Nena Roque, the latter was one of our professors last semester in NSTP-CWTSP 1. The class was situated on this covered terrace in the middle of the afternoon.

After my scheduled classes, I would continue towards the HF Office. I walked in there searching for articles to work on while I don't have major assignments running across my Academic subjects.

NEW ASSIGNMENTS AT HERALDO FILIPINO

Eric, Kay, Bonnie, and the top writers received assignments for the next release of the Decreto section in the Broadsheet. Eric is doing something about the AGS, this year's controversy at La Salle. Kay is working on several assignments from my impression.

Paul Adrienne and I wearn't assigned decreto things (wheeew), and I was assigned a regular Feature and some news to cover after much application into doing so.

For Kuya Marthy, editor of Features, I have to report the three plays the AB Com did last October. They are "Pula", "Patay Sindi", and "Bahid". The last of the three is what I'm missing at the end of the week.

For Mam Chiqui, editor in chief of the HF and acting News Coordinator due to Ate Tina's absenses, assigned me to cover the CAO Cultural Arts Month and College of Education events this semester for Collegiate News.

By Tuesday's end I would write a feature and by Wednesday's end I would also be covering two news articles.

LAST WEDNESDAY

Unlike last Semester, our Wednesday's are now fully-packed with classes. Although I've seen the COM1-1 (our neighboring block in first year) schedule which has a insane non-stop series of classes on two days, JOU1-1's Wednesdays are hectic!

Wala na ang half-day.

The only good thing about the identical Wednesday and Friday schedule is that we start classes at 0830 hours instead of 0700 hours which we all suffered back last Semester.

In Elem. Statistics, it's shaping up to be ok, the professor is ok. In Pagbasa at Pagsulat, it's Mr. Lakandupil Garcia once again (from last sem's "Sining ng Kommunikasyon"), in Bio. Sci the Professor didn't show up but our Ecology Professor from last sem substituted, and in Reed-2 a unique professor who also owns a Xerox Machine shop just outside Gate 1, and I did see her before she became my professor when I photocopied some documents the previous night.

A Xerox machine lady during off-school hours and a professor during school-hours, I want to do a feature on her! Haha. She acts very nice, calm, a little bit formal, but generally calm.

On this day we also had an HF meeting during University Break, which made me miss the opening ceremonies of the Cultural Arts Month which my former batchmates in VPAPU (the org I sacrificed off my schedule) were handling throughout the campus.

LAST THURSDAY

A lot like Tuesday! After English 1 (Comm Arts and Skills 1) we made going to 7-11 to grab some snacks a routine! We went with Ate Angge again to her house and this time we watched "Moulin Rouge", Eric's favorite movie, and it's also within my circle of good movies to watch.

It was memorable, just like how memorable Joanna and most of the girls with us had with Sean Patrick Thomas on "Save the last dance" from Tuesday. This time it was the BEAUTY, FREEDOM, TRUTH, and above all else- LOVE that got Shiela and Ate Angge, all of them including me at the end, touched.

I think we were at the part Satine died backstage at the end when our Sociology class began in JFH 201. We had to make ourselves get from Point A to Point B as soon as possible.

15 minutes later we were single file in the empty JFH 2nd floor as we entered the room to quietly find any vacant seats. Luckily I found one closer to the front and Eric was next to me.

After Sociology, we now had another 2 hour break! If we could squeeze our Thursday subjects together, we could go for a half-day. But on Thursday, we start at 0700 and end at 1700. Sheesh. 5 hours of classes, 5 hours of break.

PE SWIMMING would follow at 1500 hours (3pm). I walked to PLS and we met with our professor in Swimming. She's ok, but I know the majority voice which are the female classmates of mine would have preferred some hot swimming instructor guy who happened to walk in front of us. I didn't care, I had other things to think about like how freaking short the swimming trunks have to be or are suggested to be.

Lots of mixed views too, some say it has to be really short, others who finished Swimming already claim it could be like cycling shorts or full-body scuba suits! Todo na 'to!

I think about it. It's a great way to get a tan or to get a little darker, because I'm a bit lite on complexion and in real need of a tan or something to make me look alive and not like a vampire under the flourescent light.

LAST FRIDAY

My mom had delivered a new blanket, a new pillow case with my favorite long pillow, and a new matress to my dorm before Thursday evening and I believe I had the most comfortable sleep and wake-up in ages! My classes on Friday are exactly the same as those on Wednesday, and that also means I start at 0830 hours.

Classes were now starting and flowing in unlike the first session which was basically just an orientation. In Elem. Stat we discussed the first lessons, in Pagbasa at Pagsulat with Mr. Garcia we return to the talk about "you better be good in this subject because this is how it relates to your course" kind of talk. In Bio. Sci the professor hasn't showed up yet and later in Reed-2 we had a group seatwork and Tina told me to recite for the group.

Friday was a bit different though. In the afternoon I had objectives to accomplish. I had interviews to conduct and assist in, I had places to go to get information about international-alternative subjects to FILI123 (Pagbasa at Pagsulat), etc.

For HF Articles, I went to the CoE office to ask for the Dean so we can have an ambush interview about CoE events this new semester. Instead, the secretary helped out as best she could but Maycee gave me a series of tips and tutorials about collecting facts and news. Maycee has had so many of these moments already from last semester, so now she's relating what she's learned by telling me about her experiences and how to improve on mine.

I don't have a tape recorder, that's a vital neccesity for News writers!

I stopped by ERH 2nd Floor where all the departments of subjects are located. For my Pagbasa at Pagsulat, it was under the Languages Department and it was already late in the day to get the best help. I also decided to inquire about advancing Kursong Rizal for Foreigners which was being made available to my Balikbayan dorm mates.

I joined Maycee to interview the Dean of my college, Prof. Aquino I. Garcia. First time I met with him in person by the way. Maycee did the interview while I asked back-up questions. I also took this chance to clarify several things about AB Broadcast Journalism and Foreign subjects... which he happens to be teaching! The foreign "Kursong Rizal" will be taught by my dean... woah.

TWO BIRDS AND ONE STONE IN MY HAND

That's how he said it. AB Broadcast Journalism is like hitting two birds with one stone. He clarified to me that Broadjourn is mastering both BROADCASTING and JOURNALISM while AB Com is only sampling things and don't have as much further focus on Broadcasting and Journalism.

So it's confirmed now what my course is as it is compared with a very very similar course such as AB Com. I now have the official word from the Dean himself.

I also asked him about the foreign class he's teaching, and he said it's uncertain because the special class might dissolve... but he did meet with my room mate and HS friend Lance, and some other foreigners/balikbayans looking to take up Kursong Rizal.

The Dean of CLA said himself to me that my room mate, Lance, is reaching up to a paralyzing 36 units for this 2nd Semester! Lance spoke to Dean Garcia just a few minutes before I did. 36 units Lance?! I confirmed on Saturday that he was actually more or less 30 to 33 units this semester.

So there, I left pleased knowing what my course is officially described as and Maycee left with a good, even fun, interview with our Dean.

HERALDO FILIPINO BY WEEKS' END

As of Friday's end, I am working on three articles for the News section and one for the Feature. I've already submitted one for "Staffer's Corner" as requested together with three other writers. My CAO Cultural Arts Month article is done but needs to be revised after I found out the title of one event was re-named. My College of Education "happenings" article has some writing on it, but I need to close the lid with an arranged interview with the Dean of CoE on Monday. My CSO New Organizations article which I was the most recently assigned has complete information but just needs to be put together with MS Word. And my review of the three AB Com Plays for the Feature section is 2/3rds done.

All four articles are due Monday. Most of them only need some final say, like a flash interview or to collect a few extra words to complete the formation of an article.

Friday night was quiet, lonely, and I did close the week with a sip of hot coffee with my dorm mate Joseph while watching two Nuns practice for some Filipiniana dance in the lobby around 10 o'clock in the evening. I also joined dorm mates Paolo, Davies, and Kurt to eat at Hidden Tapsihan. And later on in the evening Paolo and Davies witnessed the guards go fishing in the lagoon. They did catch a lot of fishes.

Survivor 5 on Friday signalled the near-extinction of Sook Jai. While the 3rd Season of ANGEL premiered on studio 23 at 9pm. I also made something on the computer and mimic'd the room numbers across campus like "ERH 101". I made one for the F3 door and above it outside... "FHM-103".

SATURDAY

I was first up in a room of two out of three. Jan moves in next week still. Lance cleaned the bathroom on Thursday night and it's so clean, we really want to maintain it! The new guy in F6, Aldrich, was also a new face at the dorms but he was already gone on Saturday.

Anyways, I thought that the three from Kuwait down the hall in F9 where already suited up. I walked down the hall, fresh from the shower and in new clothes, only to find myself knocking on their screen door and hearing a voice in the dark saying "We're all still sleeping...", which was Basil.

I decided to wait for Lance instead and we left at 0830 for a Saturday foreigners' version of "Pagbasa at Pagsulat" that would start at 0800 till 1100, 3 units, 3 hours.

We arrived and met the Professor, who answered several questions that pleased the way I saw it all. She confirmed that joining foreigners FILI103f will equal my FILI123 "Pagbasa..." meaning attending Saturdays from 8am to 11am will replace my Wednesdays and Fridays with JOU1-1 in "Pagbasa at Pagsulat" from 10am to 11:30am.

She also said that no matter how small this special class is, it won't dissolve like what the Kursong Rizal for foreigners is facing at the moment.

Karl, Brian, and Basil finally arrived at ERH 110 after the Professor left for upstairs already. Lance and I led them to our new professor and we all had some talking and answering of questions upstairs on the 2nd floor of ERH.

Afterwards the five of us ate at La Buena Comida... then Lance and I went to the dorm while the three prepared to leave for Festival Mall.

Lance joined me to go to the Admin/GMH and secure an ADD/DROP Form. I was now sure I would be freeing up my schedule on Wednesdays and Fridays... and if I do this successfully, I have only three subjects per day, with good breaks to expand my contributions to the HF five and a half days a week! (Monday to Saturday AM)

THE BOARD OF SUBJECT SLOTS

At the Admin, I encountered Kuya Rheyan with his mother. I saw he had his ADD/DROP form and when I saw him with it, I felt a surge of sadness... our Kuya Rheyan, class representative, ... SHIFTING to Marketing or something.

I thought he was being forced to shift, but it was actually his idea to shift. His mother wanted him to stay in Broadcast Journalism and make it work out, while Kuya Rheyan was silent. Of course, if his mom would push him to stay put in his course... you know me! I would already be cheering Kuya Rheyan on and do my best to convince him to stay Broadjourn. And it was right there and then I saw him, after a while of searching frantically for slots in marketing subjects that I witnessed him put down his ADD/DROP form and take off with his mom.

And from my tagboard, Ate Angge said that Erian is still Broadjourn and she's returning in the summer.

And to where Jeremy left, some new guy has shifted to Broadjourn and he has appeared in a few subjects already. He's still an Irreg, but he's considered JOU1-1. More on this news as it develops next week!

Basically we are still 48+ strong, in some way.

INTERVIEWING THE P.R.O. OF THE CSO

I made Lance wait a while, sorry. I interviewed Kuya JP, 4th year Pol Sci student, inside the nice CSO office. He gave me details of the new organizations accreditted by the CSO. That interview lasted nearly thirty minutes, without tape recorder too.

After that, I logged out of HF and bagged 2 hours on Saturday, it could have been 5 or 6 if I logged in before my new class on Saturday.

GOING HOME

We returned to our dorm room to clean up some things. I used the computer and prepared to make the F3 schedule, but Jan wasn't around yet so I just saved it.

Lance left first while I left about 30 minutes later. My mom and our driver picked me up around 1:10pm and we left for Robinsons Place Imus.

Title in Review: I titlted this week's TDR based on "Save the last Dance", a movie we watched at Ate Angge's last Tuesday. I was trying to decide between "Come What May" or "All or Nothing". I didn't choose "Come What May" this week because I didn't lay back and waited for things, I applied my available self this past week to the HF. I decided "All or Nothing" would be better, and I choose that because to me this past week... it's that I get myself involved early in both HF and in Adding and Dropping a subject rather than slacking this past week. All or nothing.
