The Damage Report - Week #4
- The whole week was rain and more rain. Thus, the campus as if it was scraped out of Nature in one instant... was obviously wet, un-cemented pathways turned slick with mud, and the streets were filled with puddles and running water. The dormitories on the other hand were also slick, and at night the insects would follow the light so everyone in the 11 rooms would seek shelter inside their dorms.
- At the start of this week, I arrived late for the JOU11 make-up class for INTRO. Before I entered the room in a rush, I encountered two or three classmates (Reyen, Endrea, Kay) downstairs auditioning for the AB COMM CHANNEL. About 40 of the 49 classmates of mine applied here for this CLA-exclusive Organization. I signed up and since it was the last day and even if I was already late for Class, I decided to just take up the audition.
- During my audition for the AB COMM CHANNEL, they asked me to read from a newspaper as if I was doing a "News Flash" at, let's say, "5 o'clock". I was in the very spot I wanted to try this stuff out. I've been copying my favorite radio stations, television networks, taglines... like for example: "...it is now 10 minutes before 6pm and YOU'RE here with THE GPUTZ on MAGIC 89.9..." towards others like "THE FOLLOWING program may not be suitable for very young audiences/children.". Gets?
- During the audition, they also asked other questions. They seemed to be pleased. I mean, I was a total wreck during the VPAPU (pronounced veepau, again) TRIALS last month... to a point I even fucking cried. But after my experience in trying out for the VPAPU, I seemed to have gained more bearing on myself and I was able to take up this audition/interview for the AB COMM CHANNEL more calmly. I projected my voice well... I gave answers I never thought I'd actually say directly... (e.g. when i was asked: "name a reporter out there that inspires you." ...then i answered: "Christianne Amanpour, CNN Chief International yata yata yatta..."), and once again their faces wearn't the faces of horror like I felt before during the VPAPU TRIALS... instead, they seemed to have given me this look that was kinda encouraging. Heck, maybe some Muse from Charmed that day was next to me. =)
- Again, the rain was present. And throughout this week, I was on a higher level of alert with those freaky D.O.'s (Discipline Officers). Well, I'm the little innocent dude who doesn't like to get in trouble... yet... the whole CHOCOLATE BROWN PANTS issue for school uniform has been such a pain in the ass. Last summer the lady at the Linen Department told my mom and myself that the pants for the boys at DLSU-D would be "anything dark". So I thought... "anything dark" = "black". So we tailored three pairs for me, extra baggy (finally, to break away from old Atheneum's normal width pants for me) which costed like a fortune. And then those black and baggy pants lasted for only three weeks... as the school says all freshmen need to wear the new and proper uniform.
- So my battle tactics to escape the D-O's? I had a battle plan, and with the tips of my upperclassmen roomie Jan added with simple clues... I was able to survive the rest of the week from those emotionless and monotone Discipline Officers. I was caught once, but I managed to convince the Officer (in English, para "special") to hand me back my ID. Because when you get caught, they take your ID then you have to claim it inside the DISCIPLINE OFFICE and sign something and I don't want anything like that on my record. Well, maybe one day it'll happen... but not on pants... and it's not even my fault. *stares at the Linen Department*
- The tactics, how can I forget. (I got carried away). (1) From Jan, my new roomie and in 2nd year, "only the freshmen of DLSU-D and all the incoming generations are to wear one assigned colored pants which is chocolate brown. The upperclassmen, will still be able to wear black, beige, cargo pants, etc.". So from Jan, the brown pants thing applies only for freshmen.
- Let's continue... (2) the #1 easy indicator some dude or girl is a Froshie (Freshmen) is when you see this person walking around with the new green-strap for the ID. So when you see someone with an ID with the green strap, then you'd think of this person as a "Froshie".
- Placing together both clues... all I had to do this week was find a way to hide my status as a Freshmen and pretend to be an Upperclassman. I bought an ID Clip and temporarily removed the freshmen-indicator green strap. And POOF, you can walk around wearing black pants or any pants. But still be cautious.
- Other then the whole Chocolate Brown Pants issue, the week was also filled with shooting and filming. On Thursday we went to some abandoned warehouse that they're turning into this church with makeshift classrooms on the sides for the street children who aren't getting good education. Then I got to use a video camera (Alelyn's camera, you won't know her... even I barely know her) and shoot the "Seminar" we gave to 12 to 15 street kids aged 6 to 13. I didn't expect this, I mean I'm not the director and I'm just the cameraman. But there was this odd feeling... as a LaSallian wearing their uniforms and having this and that then seeing these children who don't have what we have, might not ever will... but still see that one little girl smiling like the world is bliss and all flowers and yellow brick roads when truly the place we were at was defined by the word "Resettlement" and stuff.
- I'm not sure the others felt this, because they just ate bread and laughed out loud while these kids who we'd think would be naughty actually had so much interest in listening to our basic "Seminar" about basic facts about nature. All caught on tape... followed by two interviews. One with a lady, and interviewed by classmate Cindy. And another with some guy who was a drug addict before, and interviewed by his friend and our classmate- Angge. I beefed up the footage with extra shots of the warehouse and backstage talk after the interviews.
- Back at DLSU-D later on Thursday Night, we watched AB COMM (red) vs. AB PSYCHOLOGY (green) fight each other off in Basketball (Boys), and Volleyball (Girls), Vollyball (Boys). Classmate and friend William, was in the Volleyball game against the other guys of AB Psychology. Why all this? The CLA sportsfest is still on-going.
- It was all cheers... even if PLS (gym) wasn't completely crowded... fellow AB COMMs (Broadjourn falls under AB Comm this year, next year Broadjourn finally has an official place and will no longer be under Comm Arts but instead stand on it's own as a main AB course at CLA) cheered. It reminded me of old Atheneum during the 4th year cheerleading just before the "There ain't no mountain high enough!".
- AB Comm won in the Girls Volleyball and Boys Basketball... yet another game was played earlier on Friday evening but I was packing up.
- On Friday morning, I was once again late for class as I left th dorm at 7:05am when class would begin at 7:00am. I rushed to JFH 101 for Ecology when I entered a professor-less classroom and was bombarded by a series of "CONGRATULATIONS GEORGE!!!".
- ???
- What? Congratulations? Did I win something? Did I win a car? Why the hell are people congratulating me? Ahhh... I know... I made it to class before the professor came in even if it's late already....
- NO.
- Jhen dragged me outside into the hallway and positioned me in front of the Bulletin Board. It was the results of the AB COMM CHANNEL... out of like over 75 that applied for this organization, a list of only 12 names was there. All the others were COM students, and only about 5 were Froshies.
- "George Edward Putong - JOU11"
- I was the only "JOU" listed there.... even from the upper levels.... I couldn't breathe. I made it? I'm now on the AB COMM CHANNEL to make documentaries, etc. ?!
- THANK YOU..... AGAIN *looks up, and this time with his hands folded*
- That makes Two Organizations, and one last one... the Mountaineering Society to be done next week. I've reached the point where I'm shutting myself from other Organizations now. I've reached my limit already. VPAPU is during the la salle events... AB COMM CHANNEL, i don't know yet. MOUNTAINEERING... is only on weekends for training (it's not like we're going to hike and climb a mountain five times a week ya know).
- In the last class of the Week... we had PE. I just had so much energy I just had to vent it out somehow.... I was in this trance... I just didn't want to stop doing activities. From push-ups... to sit-ups/crunches... Relay and Running... etc.
- ENOUGH now about me... and this crazy yet fun College Life as it still goes on... JHEN, ATHENA, ARJAY, AND WILLIAM await results of making it into Theatro LaSalliana with the official postings on Tuesday next week. Go BroadJourn!!! TODO NA TO!!! (the official tagline of the Journalours as of lately).
- LEAH and JONI (of Cavite City BTW) are already in the Chorale. Congrats.
- WILDA and BIANCA are in the Pointes' and Flexes' i think. Congrats too.
- ERIC, UPPER, MAYCEE, await results from the Heraldo Filipino (school paper). I tried out too, but I'm cancelling my application since I've reached my maximum already.
- TINA awaits results from the EX CATHEDRA debate group. Good luck Madam President!
- KEITH remains in Taekwondo and practices M-W-F.
- That seems to be it... good night.
