THE PHILOSOPHER'S REG. FORM
Carpe Noctem (Seize the Night) - Week #36/1

NOTE: A weekly post made before starting a week of studies at DLSU-D.

"Something is very wrong with the scheduling. Where does the blame go?"

TOMORROW is Tuesday, April 8 and so begins the Broadjourn Summer Term. It's supposed to be organized and all set but another flaw "somewhere" has made things more cloudy. So cloudy it makes me frustrated. So frustrated it ignites sentiments of name-calling towards our very own Administration or Faculty or Programmer or what-ev-er.

What am I talking about? The curriculum of Broadcast Journalism includes a Summer Term from 1st Year to 3rd Year. Unlike our AB Communication counterparts, Broadjourn has two subjects listed every summer in-between year levels in our curriculum. Any newbie would probably argue, but as students dedicated to our course we've learned to adapt and adjust to such an "odd" curriculum. In comparison to truly busy courses (e.g. Nursing, Physical Therapy), Broadjourn should be able to squeeze those Summer Subjects back into the two Semesters in 2nd Year, 3rd Year, and 4th Year. But that's not how it goes, so we can't really argue about it.

Ok. So if it is accepted that Broadjourn has a Summer Term, why does it feel like we're fighting for our own slots?! Wait. It doesn't feel like that. It IS like that already. We are fighting for our own slots. My classmates and I are fighting for slots alongside those who have failed these subjects and those who plan on advancing these subjects. Why must we fight for slots of a Curriculum that already tells us these subjects are part of our Flowchart. These subjects should automatically and properly be reserved for JOU1-1.

It doesn't end there. The Curriculum Flowchart of any course is like the Heart and Constitution of it. Why is ours filled with oddities and why is ours not quite updated? Our Flowchart still says "YESP" and "ROTC", when those subjects were eliminated University-Wide if not Nation-wide already! Why isn't there a clear explanation of these errors? For the Broadjourn Program Council, I ask you bring life to Broadjourn and get it some decent respect from "who-ever" is in-charge.

So, a busted old Flowchart for a still gleaming and brand new course such as ours remains standing. Let's set aside these "errors" and analyze it even more.

"Literature of the Philippines" and "Philosophy of Man" stand as the 1st Year Summer subjects in our beloved Curriculum Flowchart. We took "Literature of the Philippines" in the 1st Semester to replace "English 101", for some reason. (Due to lack of professors if the whole Freshmen body of the University took English 101 in the same semester)

So, the adjustments were made. "Litt" was in the 1st Sem. "Eng101" would start in the 2nd Sem. And the result would have "English 102" and "Philo" for 1st Year Summer. It's like the three slid gracefully.

Wrong.

The Admin and the Communication Arts Department Faculty seem to have had mis-communicated. The Admin reserved "Litt" and "Philo" for our Summer Term this year. "Litt" is something we all finished back in the 1st Sem. Wait. Did the Admin even reserve "Litt"? Does the Admin really "reserve"? Why is it we ran out of slots even in Philo?

Why was it we were all running for slots last Friday during Enrolment for incoming 2nd Year students? April 4 was our assigned date for enrolment.

Some of my classmates have enrolled in both subjects, "Philo" and "English102". They did it because they really squeezed themselves alongside those from other courses. Our Class President had to speak to the CAD Chair just to get them to open up an additional "Philo" for JOU1-1. Teenah did so, and a new class for "Philo" was opened up and shouldn't be a problem for my classmates and me.

"Philo" was the only subject I got to enrol in last Friday.

"Eng102" on the other hand is to be dealt with tomorrow. My Philosophy class is from 10am-12pm Monday to Thursday at DPH 206. The English 102 issue is to be sorted out afterwards.

Tomorrow will also be the first time I'll be commuting alone from Tanza, Cavite to the DLSU-D Campus. I know the way. I hate commuting alone because "it gives me depressing thoughts". But I will pull through.

No School today (Monday) and No School on Wednesday. Meaning classes are only tomorow and on Thursday. Unless "Eng102" bids for a Friday session. I'm seeing nothing on the radar right now. Just a little stress with the mistakes and errors that plague the Summer of my University. I believe in DLSU-D and I know it's improving every year. But "the little things" like this... especially the seemingly unorganized methods the CAD gives towards JOU1-1 is a pain in the ass. We, as a class, do our best to fix the mess by informing the proper authorities and asking the right questions. But where do the heads of our course or our department or our entire University take us? Ayusin nila ito. AYUSIN!
