BLUEPRINT OF A CATHEDRAL
Carpe Noctem (Seize the Night) - Start of Week #40/5

NOTE: A weekly post made before starting a week of studies at La Salle.

"...San Agustin Church, Manila Catherdal, Baclaran, Las Piñas Church..."

OUR Research Paper in English102 is entitled "Wood and Stone: Philippine Church Architecture and Imagery" and it's been something my partner and I have been working on for the past few weeks. It's actually quite simple, it's just the ability to make it stand out more and make it very interesting is what our goal is.

On Tuesday and Thursday this week we will embark to Metro Manila and explore four churches. The San Agustin Church and Manila Cathedral in Intramuros on Tuesday and the Baclaran, Las Piñas, and Parañaque churches on Thursday.

The search for the second-hand CR-V continues. We've had some results but none of them satisfied what we were looking for. We now have a list of numbers of dealers and this week we will start making phone calls so these dealers can help us find the "ideal CR-V" I've been seeing and dreaming of.

Meanwhile, the 2nd to the last week of my Summer Term is this week. It's supposed to be the third to the last week, but since there's a HF Seminar in Baguio City from May 19-22... it'll cut out the last week.

My dad e-mailed us and he said his replacement will arrive on either the 21st or 22nd of May. Currently, his ship the USNS Ericsson left its home port in Singapore and is now bound for Guam or Saipan. It takes about a week to get from Singapore to Guam on that Oiler Ship.

A Little Background on my Dad's Whereabouts

My dad left the Philippines in search of a Job in Guam on the 16th of June back in 2002. He was supposed to get a job as a Supply Clerk in Guam but instead the job options there lessened so he applied for becoming a special Merchant Marine force known as the "Military Sealift Command" or MSC. The MSC is a lower affiliate of the US Navy, my dad retired from the US Navy in 1998 after serving for 21 years.

He started training on the East Coast of the United States by October and November in 2002. Then in late November 2002, he was assigned to his first and only ship so far, the USNS Ericsson. The USNS Ericsson is an Oiler Ship. Coincidently, the Ericsson was assigned to the Persian Gulf.

In December 2002, the Ericsson futhered up the Persian Gulf towards Kuwait and Iraq. His port in that region was in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. My dad was on the Ericsson during the three weeks of the War in Iraq (or the 2nd Gulf War). His ship left for Singapore and he was to arrive on March 17 in the Lion City. Coincidently, March 17 is also the day the SARS Outbreak was officially announced by the World Health Organization and Singapore was one of the infected countries.

Due to the War in Iraq, the MSC sent its ships to that region such as this big hospital ship. My dad's 2-month vacation from work was to start in mid-March but was postponed even up to now since there are no replacements to take his position on the ship while he was gone. There are others like him as well on-board the ship who have been waiting for replacements so they can go home.

The USNS Ericsson has left its home port in Singapore and after some repairs, it is headed to either Guam or Saipan. And finally, his replacement is arriving on the 21st or 22nd of May. And perhaps on the 22nd to the 24th of May, he will finally be home again after nearly one whole year.

There ya'll go. That's the story with my dad over the past 11 months. This is the longest time ever we've gone without him near us. With his new job, we have been able to complete the ceiling and re-paint all the interior walls of the house since January 2003. Our Pacific Internet Plan has been upgraded from 50 hours originally and is now 80 hours (despite how shitty, unreliable, and inconvinient Pacific Internet has been since March 2003). I can now buy clothes instead of window shopping like before. When he gets back, we will complete the floorings of the house and hopefully have a second-hand car (preferably a Satin Silver Metallic colored CR-V) so I won't have to ride in that Piece of Metal on Wheels (Service Jeep).

Hopefully the visits to these churches will be beneficial and useful in our defense next week. That's all for now.
