Ronalyn Arciaga's Debut in Laguna
THIS would be my third debut (my first was just last June) and it took place last Sunday night in Legazpi Private Pool in San Pedro, Laguna. Rona is my classmate in JOU2-1 and good friend in the class.
It all started with me txting Jerson, Krystel, Lance, and Eric to prepare to meet me (I was providing transport with the CR-V) at their assigned locations. Former classmate Jerson at my house at 4pm, classmate Krystel and my best friend Lance in McDo Noveleta around 5:30pm, and my classmate Eric in front of SM City Bacoor around 6pm.
It didn't exactly turn out that way. Jerson had "paperwork" to do while Krystel had an emergency to tend with at her house in Cavite City. And, to top that off... I "painfully" waited for Lance for a little over an hour after our meeting time at McDo Noveleta.
The driver and I were growing impatient but I knew Lance wanted to go and Lance was invited to this debut. So we waited until it was already dark in old Noveleta. He finally came and for a few minutes I couldn't come up with any words to say to him since I was so hungry and so worried about being late.
We picked up Eric at SM Bacoor near the taxi's and then we zoomed down Aguinaldo Hi-Way towards Pala-Pala in Dasmarinas. Our driver suddenly made this wrong turn into this one-way street and immedietly our license was taken! To me, I didn't want to add to the stress of already being late. The debut starts at 7pm and we were still in Cavite, specifically Dasmarinas, around 8:30pm! It was insane. This was the first time I would be late to a debut.
Flashback to Charmagne's Debut last June 2003
Location: Coconut Palace, CCP Complex, Metro Manila
Eric, Aldrich, and I waited for ages inside this prestigious lobby... and to say we got there just ten minutes before the event was supposed to start. The debut started about an hour and a half after the set time. I was the only one wearing a barong tagalog and I was badly waiting for the other guys in barong to arrive.
Flashback to Katz' Debut last July 12, 2003
Location: San Pedro, Laguna
Eric, Tope, and I waited for quite a while as we arrived exactly on time for Katz' debut. The whole place was set up and the waiters were there, and we were there waiting for the others to come. I was wearing a green long-sleeved polo with a black coat.

We sped past Carmona and beyond Southwoods and briefly into Binan just to get into the South Luzon Superhighway. We took the Southwoods exit just a piso away and followed the instructions that were being txt'd to me by Katz' through former classmate Emil's cellphone.
The directions were quite accurate and we arrived at the Legazpi Private Pool around 9 o'clock in the evening. The thing is though, the debut had started (around 8:30pm)... so we just missed the formalities. Eric, Lance, and I arrived to see jets of water spraying out of this medium-sized swimming pool.
Emil stood up, and it was the first time I saw him in a long time. He showed us where he and the rest of Broadjourn 2-1 were sitting. We went there and as we sat down the 18 Roses dance began.

Eric was called first amongst us followed by a few relatives of Rona's. Then I was called. I was so damn conscious about what I was wearing. I was wearing this red long-sleeved polo without a coat... so I was generally conscious about my tuck-in being even and all. It was a semi-formal event.
Edward (of Polsci2-1) took after me and Keith also took Rona after Edward.
By this point, we were hungry... actually... everyone was starving. While the lines began (it was quite slow since they ran out of rice how many times)... I asked Lance to go with me to the C.R. Katz', Upper, and Leah were all joking with Lance. "Lance... if you love her, you have to court her!" ... "Lance... you'll regret it if someone gets to her first..."

I wish I could just explain my best friend's situation to them... but it wasn't the time (and place... the CR Lobby area). Lance just smiled and I asked Lance to help me fix my friggin' tuck-in.
We couldn't fix it and I complained about it on and on until he mentioned I was acting like someone we both know, immedietly I just shut-up and told Lance we should just get in the buffet line.
We got in line and as we arrived at the rice area... these two guys in front of us took all the remaining rice (it was just good enough for one more person). They took it so fast... and to say the rice they were rushing to get onto their plate was all burnt and everything. I was like "um... go ahead and get the burnt rice... geez... you guys are so hungry...".
Out of rice
It turned out that Lance and I, being at the end of the line, were holding these naked plates. There was no rice and then Rona's mom passed by and started to complain with the waiters "Where is the rice?!". I observed and by the looks of it, the waiter knew there was "no more rice". Rona's mom argued with the waiter while Lance and I skipped the rice and just put some dishes onto our rice-less plates.

We couldn't even get seats... until classmate Ayesha and Broadjourn friend Elei (3rd year) offered their seats to us at a different table since they were finished eating. I ate the chop seuy, the menudo-like dish, and the tinola-like dish... all without rice. It got to a point I was feeling weirded out by it.
Rona's mom kindly passed by and apologized. I was so shy... I understood the situation with the outage of rice. But she really looked around the whole place for Lance and I just to tell us that the resort was cooking more rice. Thank you po!
18 Candles and Gifts
The 18 Candles happened and I stood at the side to take pictures... as part of this tradition I'm trying to keep. I was personally touched by the statements that classmate Joy and Rona's grandmother said. Joy confessed to the whole party- as she held that microphone -that Rona... well um, basta... something personal and something to do with swimming that got everyone laughing and Rona shaking and laughing... Joy's speech was touching. And I was also touched personally by what Rona's grandmother said. What her grandmother said was just so sweet... and I could see parang gusto umiyak si Rona.

Afterwards the 18 Gifts happened and Lance didn't know he was one of the 18 gifts. The thing is though, the list of 18 this and that was made public. Lance didn't have a gift at the time (he was going to buy one and give it to her this week)... so when he was called, he was like in total shock! I was sitting in the back next to Eric and I immedietly rushed to get my bag and pull out my gift. I gave it to Lance "Lance... here... give it to her..."
Lance walked to the microphone, held my gift and then put it down with the other gifts, and then he said something like... "Uh... Umm... the meaning of the gift is found inside the gift..."
Tawa lahat kami.
The dancers performed to a 2nd song and then a disco pursued. By this time, Lance and I were finished eating complete meals (the rice finally came) and then we started talking about plans for the rest of the evening. Originally, Lance, Eric, and I were overnight at this resort but it was at the party we realized no one was staying overnight. So, we changed the plan and decided to go with Upper and Leah back to the dormitories after visiting someone's house nearby.
We stayed for a few minutes at the Billiards corner inside the resort where Apple and Kate Mamon were playing. Kate was wearing a nice dress and while she was playing billiards... mukha siyang mataray na babae! Wow Kate!! Hahaha.
Jezire, Ayesha, Kate, Leah, Keith, Upper, Katz, Eric, Apple, and myself made up for the attendance of JOU2-1 at Rona's Debut. Former classmate Emil made it as well. Friend "of a friend" Elei was there and Ayesha's guy best friend Edward (of Polsci 2-1) was also there. Apple's boyfriend Richard and Keith's cousin Kuya JR was also there.

The plan was to go to Apple's house around that time (it was 12 midnight) and to drink a little (um... read on about this "drink a little") and then Lance and I would ride with Upper and Leah back to La Salle around 5 o'clock in the morning. Thus making it easier on my driver coming from Tanza.
Nagpaalam kami kay Rona and she tried to convince us to stay overnight. I wanted to stay overnight but we just couldn't since no one was really staying overnight and my pick-up at the resort was at 9am in the morning... while Rona said they were packing up around 6am in the morning. Yikes.
We rode inside Upper's SUV. She was driving, Leah and Katz were in the passenger seat joking loudly it just made everyone laugh. Eric, Lance, and I... the guys... were in the backseat. ...Parang baliktad. o_O
Since it was so dark in San Pedro, we were talking about backseat ghosts... headless tricycle drivers... honking when driving on a bridge... etc. It was freaky. We all screamed for the sake of it.
We bought some ice and some Island Punch Gin Polmelo at 7-11 and then headed around to drive to Apple's house. We got to Apple's house and met with Keith and his cousin Kuya JR... Apple and her boyfriend Richard were in the kitchen fixing up some potato pulutan.
The potato slices were delicious... the french fries were delicious... there was even a bag of Lay's Potato Chips Sour Cream flavor... talk about potatoes.
For the very first time
Now this is it, this was the first time I was part of a group drinking session. Wait, before we get any ideas, the people I were with aren't the hardcore drinkers. We just drank bit by bit... until I lost control of myself... for the very first time.
It started with having two glasses and a pitcher with San Mig Light and lots of ice in it. We passed around the two glasses. After the San Mig Light, Keith and Kuya JR were already drinking Red Horse. Eric, who was serving everyone (there's a title for that in tagalog... geez... I forgot...) moved ahead to Gin Pomelo.
This was the first time I had Gin Pomelo. And being to "george" that I am, I like to savor the taste. Stupid of me! I was savoring the taste regardless of the alcoholic content of gin... which is 9% compared to a San Mig Light's 5%. I went to the kitchen and asked Apple for two more glasses... so the drinking could happen faster.
I poured myself half a glass of Gin Pomelo and Lance suddenly reacted "George... are you sure?!". I suddenly snapped back to my senses for a few seconds just to pour half of what I poured myself onto another glass and I handed it to Lance.
I liked the taste of Gin Pomelo, but then it ran out already. That's when Kuya JR... already struck drunk... said Gorgeous George... (he called Lance "Lancelot") ... here... try this.
It wasn't like I was put into a spell to try a glass of Red Horse. I've always wanted to. I was expecting a reaction like that in the commercial. I didn't get that reaction on the first short glass with ice in it.
Without thinking, I poured myself (from the same bottle) another short ice-cold glass of Red Horse. Lance was watching television and I was laughing extra sensitive to Leah and her jokes and her laughter. There was this one laughter from her that all I saw on her face was her wide open mouth screaming in laughter and that triggered me to laugh uncontrollably.
It wasn't until the fourth short ice-cold glass of Red Horse (about 4/5 of one medium-sized Red Horse bottle) that I started to get the symptoms of tipsyness. I started looking around the room and felt like all those problems I have were suddenly shielded and taken away from me.
With Kuya JR's jokes and the onslaught of more Red Horse bottles (for him)... it got to a point where I kept saying to myself "I'm just tipsy... I'm not drunk."
And when my mentality was set that way, I ended up pouring myself some more.
Compared to the estimated 4-5 Red Horse bottles Kuya JR had, I believe I had almost 2 bottles worth of Red Horse before the next thing I know I was slapped in the face by a ice cold towel by Apple. I was also holding a mug of black coffee. I recall seeing my classmate Joy sitting there on the chair just looking at everyone and I felt so bad. I recall seeing Jezire there, telling them to get me some coffee or something. Eric and Katz' were half asleep while Leah was lying down listening to Kuya JR's jokes. Keith on the other hand was apologizing on behalf of his cousin. Lance was laughing and watching television. Apple and Richard, being the sweet couple and all... were in the dining room on stand-by.
It was time to go and we stuffed ourselves into Upper's SUV. It was almost 4 o'clock in the morning. I was sitting on Lance's lap since there wasn't anymore space. We just kept on laughing... good thing Upper wasn't under the influence. I would never ride if our driver was tipsy or drunk.
We dropped Katz to her place and then later on, after several turns, we dropped Jezire. We lessened our load and I just felt numb of the emotions that bind me.
My head was on Lance's shoulder until I recall falling slightly asleep. I could still feel the cold breeze on my face as we sped down some highway. Next thing I know, we're on the Alabang-Zapote road dropping Joy to this one street. Then Leah and Upper got some taho in Las Pinas. My eyes close for a few minutes...
And I am awaken by the alarming reactions of Leah when we ended up on the Coastal Highway! Oh my God! We couldn't turn around!! We ended up entering Metro Manila... turning right at the KFC building and taking a U-turn at that one big gas station with the "Park and Fly" parking garage building. We went underneath Coastal Mall and rushed back into cavite... at the same time seeing the skies turn from midnight black to navy blue.
It was one of those moments I will never forget.
Leah just kept on joking and we ended up paying toll expenses at Php 24.00! Hahaha. We dropped Eric near Imus and then the four of us (Upper, Leah, Lance, and myself) down towards La Salle. On the sides of the hi-way we could see students of DLSU-D all fresh and wearing their uniforms. What about us? We were still wearing our clothes from Sunday.
The Untouchables enter La Salle
We entered the DLSU-D campus around 6:30 in the morning and they dropped Lance and I off at the Men's dorm. The guard looked at us in slight confusion. We signed in and I saw Alex, fresh in his uniform, on his laptop in my room. I felt like I was a ghost that violated time and space to suddenly appear in my dorm. I don't have any belongings from home.
I badly wanted some crackers to eat since my saliva still tasted like Red Horse. I went to F7 and into Tony's room. To find him there, by himself, half-awake under this maroon blanket that looked like a towel. Next to him on his clean bed was this old Goosebumps book.
Awww...
He looked like he was just so relaxed in his sleep. I felt like I was this dirty person who entered the room suddenly asking for crackers. He woke up and then gave me some Ritz Crackers (wow) and showed me his schedule for next semester.
Then he joined me in F3 until 8 o'clock since his class was at 0830 hours. I fell asleep and woke up when my mom entered the room abour an hour and a half later.
I was picked up. I felt dizzy. I thought I surpassed the "throw up time" but I didn't. As I was riding in our CR-V, I felt like that "throw up time" was still a possibility. Imagine, glasses of San Mig Light, Island Punch Gin Pomelo, and Red Horse Beer in one night.
Overall, I look back at the evening as greatly memorable. Now, I have to get to work because there is just so much to do. Happy Birthday Rona!! I enjoyed the whole night... the party and the afterparty.
