LOOKING BACK INTO 2004 - PART I
24 Best Memories of 2004 - #24 to #13

I STARTED blogging three weeks after I graduated High School. That was more than two and a half years ago. Today, I've managed to kept track of my college life from Day 1. I'm not sure if this is some stupid attempt in archiving my life in case I come down with Alzheimer's (thanks Joy for correcting my spelling) some time in the future, or if this is just a habit of improving both my writing and my knowledge of internet technologies.

Nevertheless, it's come down to another festive year. From January to December, the snowball effect of emotions, memories, and strange intensities bring me to this point. This will mark the second year I've completed a "Year Ender" post to highlight the best, the worst, and the craziest that's happened to me.

And now, the first part of "24 BEST MEMORIES OF 2004".

We were cheated

The year 2004 started off with me glued to my television set every weekend to catch the Pointes 'N Flexes Dance Troupe. They were the best DLSU-D could offer in dance competitions out there. It so happens UPLB defeated the six time winning streak of DLSU-D on GMA-7's Campus Front Act competition.

Wait. It was on that unfaithful episode where the champions of a previous round were placed into "FRONTACT B", thus causing confusion among PNF fans and supporters of our alma mater. In those days, I was posting pictures of PNF on SOP RULES here in my blog. My blog later became a battleground between fans of both PNF and the UPLB Streetjazz. It was messy.

Behold, Aiza

Broadjourn couldn't have been more exciting with my block JOU2-1 (at the time) split into several groups to cover the FacAss concert "FA on Stage: Aiza Seguerra". Each group was to compose a music video which would be submitted to Sir Palad as a requirement for our Intro to Broadcasting major.

I remember strapping a video camera onto the top of a tripod, and then folding its' legs and using the entire length of it as an extension of my arm. My goal? To simulate a bird's eye view soaring across the crowd. Did it work? It was dark.

Forever friends

I am still amazed at how high school ties never break off. The largest group in my batch from high school self-entitled "GNOTEK" (which is a name supposedly meant to represent the whole Atheneum Class of 2002, not just a group in it) threw a summer mini-reunion. All was invited.

Almost everyone from Atheneum class of 2002 was there except my own close friends from high school. It was the first time I met up with them since graduation in April of 2002. We emptied Sandy's Tanza of all their beer bottles. And I went swimming with batchmates I don't remember ever swimming with even in high school.

Serapio pictorial

I've always wanted to do a photo shoot for someone. A real photo shoot, that's what I mean. My classmates Tope, Arjay, Athena, and Jhen (all of Teatro Lasalliana) asked me to take one of the pictorials for their "Mang Serapio" major production.

Actually, they did everything. All I did was just point and shoot. But I had so much fun, and they gave me the chance to fulfill something I've always wanted to do. Viva Performing Arts!

I had abs

In the past few years I've always tried engaging in a gym program. In HS, I learned how to use the bench press at age 16. But as college came in, there was simply no time. This past year my mom bought my brother and I a home gym. At the dorm during the summer I was addicted to protein supplements such as Enervon Chocolate. I ate tofu, boiled eggs, and I did hundreds if not thousands of crunches. I did push-ups, worked on light weights, and got myself fit.

For a time, that is. After the home gym broke while I was using it on some humid day in July, it was downhill from there. I managed to get pictures of myself with those abs, but I'm not going to post it since my best friend requested me to "keep my wholesome image". Haha. Point taken, those abs disappeared again... sad.

Summer outings

I decided to dorm during the summer since I enrolled myself into three subjects, one of them advanced. I spent summer nights relaxing at the dorm, training at the local gym, and of course- going places with my friends.

We went to Volets to go swimming one time and had our own photo shoot for a drama series. The most memorable summer outing though was when Karl drove us to Tagaytay City. His reckless driving kept our eyes wide open. In Tagaytay, we just drank and relaxed at some hidden bar. It was also the time I was trying to get used to Leah being with Tom.

Home sweet home

With my dad being with the family only twice in 2004 (early January and then the Summer season), he managed to pile enough bacon for us so we can finally get the garage, the kitchen, and the real home bar complete.

Just this Christmas break, the painters are doing the finishing touches. The only thing left from 2005 onwards is the landscaping, the long wooden patio I suggested in the backyard, and finishing the CR-V installments. Only then, my dad will come home to be with my mom and everyone can live happily ever after.

I drove to Las Piñas

I hid my smile from my driving instructor. There I was, driving past a market somewhere in Las Piñas. I still had trouble working with Gear 1 and the gas pedal, but nevertheless I did it.

I am so happy that I finally got to drive around. My parents have been pushing me around for ages to get me into driving school. During that loaded sembreak in October, I managed to drive a manual Altis all around Bacoor, up north to Las Piñas to as far south as Noveleta. And on one crazy night following a party in Cavite City, I drove from there to hometown Tanza, for the first time.

Hyatt hotel

This memory shouldn't beat the ones above, actually. But the strangeness of this evening just makes it memorable. I was in a grand ballroom enjoying exquisite and expensive food watching Lance dance with one of his closest friends ever. What made it more strange was sleeping over with a bunch of Atheneans and Lasalistas (Taft) I didn't even know.

I was an alien, that's how it felt. But I had fun. It was, afterall, a nice hotel. And it was frightening (and hilarious) when our hotel rooms started receiving crazy phone calls demanding for money or an unsafe discharge from the hotel.

Broadjourn ka-puso

As a third year major in college, going on exposure trips such as these are a rare find. In our RTV Newswriting class during the 1st semester, we were invited by Sir Geslani to take a tour of GMA-7 studios in QC. Yes, we were kids again.

I recall having really long and unbalanced hair at the time... my bangs were killing me! I hate looking at the pictures. Other memories here include Apple being attacked by Hetti of Jollybee, Jeremy Manicad being lifted by Jollybee, ordering Starbucks chocolate frappe with Arazelli even if I had another meal to consume at that time, meeting the DJs of 97.1 WLSFM, and going to THE PODIUM for the first time.

Baywalk club

No year would ever be complete if it didn't have a sufficient amount of get-togethers with old friends. Unlike GNOTEK, who see each other every day just about, our little group from high school has more difficulty in scheduling.

We had Ekai's birthday again at her house which was also Marchelle's (Lance's younger sister) farewell meeting with us since she left for the states. Then there was baby Ethan's baptismal (see next memory) which united us ninongs and ninangs in Rosario. Bryan came back during the summer and we ate at the balsa, again. We can't forget about our outing to Baywalk and then the recent Christmas gathering I hosted here in Tanza last week.

Ethan gets baptized

In 2004, I still had to get used to changes. One of them is Candy's big change, she's now a happy mother of a bouncing baby boy. During the summer she had Ethan baptized and I was one of the ninongs. The church was crowded and filled with babies that were to be baptized (it was a festival day for baptisms).

However, that wasn't the only memory that morning. Before entering the church, a mob of two fat female vendors suddenly pinned these "religious icons" or images of "saints" saying it will bring me good luck for 25 days. It was 20 pesos, then it became 50 pesos if the luck was to stay for 50 days. It was bullshit, I tried removing it but they insisted I just pay up. I learned from that experience. Streetsmart Experience Points up by 10.

There you have it, best memories #24 to #13. I'll post the remaining TWELVE on New Year's Eve. What else is there? BAGUIO, BANAUE, PUERTO, BROADJOURN PRODUCTIONS, AND VARIOUS OTHER COMEDIES AND DRAMAS.
