FORK IN THE ROAD
The Damage Report - Year 3 - Summer Week #02
Background Music: "Obsession (No Es Amor)" by Frankie J ft. Baby Bash
NOTE: This is a weekly blog entry that summarizes a series of events of a finished week in and around La Salle.
'Now that you have given me a chance to serve this council, I will terminate my application for editor at Heraldo Filipino'
AT 12:24 PM on Wednesday, the start of a big change happened. The place was Bulwagang Jose Basa. The people around me were Broadcast Journalism students from all year levels. The mood was festive, which followed a suspenseful tone just minutes before.
I had just been elected as President of the Broadcast Journalism Program Council. Thus, cementing my decision to withdraw my on-going application for editor next school year. I will properly inform the EIC, ASSOC, and our adviser.
The past few days
I had spoken with my circle of closest friends and they've all been informed that my passion to lead is drawing me towards Broadjourn. I love Broadcast Journalism. The people here are so talented, they just need an effective leadership (council) to get them out there. The first year need to be enlightened, the second year need to be empowered, and the third year need to be further engaged as future leaders.
I've been weighing in between Broadjourn and Heraldo Filipino. I don't want to stay in HF because I'm hungry for column space or need a scholarship. That's not me. I've been asking myself where my graduating year in college lies, where it's safer (HF) or where the heart lies more (BJPC).
I'm satisfied by what I've done for HF despite the work environment I've had to deal with this past year. I don't need to go any further, especially as editor. I'm happy that I've survived as Copy Editor this entire year and I'm still determined to wrap it up with the release of four more issues (Palad Literary Folio, Alipato Art and Photo Folio, Just Play Sports Magazine, and La SalleƱo Special).
My decision to run for President was finalized after I had a chat with my friend and classmate Cristina Aure, the incoming President of CLASC.
The past few weeks
I've been irritated at how the environment at HF has focused too much on work and leaving out the family concept. I don't like what happened to Tom and though I've accepted it, to see how people treat him as if he did nothing for HF just blew me away.
Show some courtesy and appreciation for goodness sakes. Shame on those who overlook his sacrifices.
The next few days
I told Sir Rommel to give me a few days, a sort of 'grace period' to fully absorb my new responsibilities at Broadjourn. I will formally terminate my application for editor in a few days. It's just not an easy thing to do, to let go of a dream that is damaged and partly shattered.
The next few weeks
I'll be planning activities for Broadjourn with the BJPC and researching on the history of HF with Eric and selected staffers. The next few weeks will also be the only time I'll hold two positions simultaneously ('incumbent' Copy Editor and 'incoming' President).
I want to train the next Copy Editor and fill him or her with tips and tricks and a few other tidbits from what I've learned this past year. Sana ituloy niya ang mga formats na ginawa ko. Hey, my term is good until May 31!
On the other hand, I am looking forward into meeting the different faces of Broadjourn. I've said it this past week to many people, I want stronger ties between the different year levels. Broadjourn will be a family, we'll make our own "ka-puso".
