UNES ET VERSUS IN CALIRAYA
The fear, the fun, and the fruitful
[pictures to follow]
Last weekend I was at the Caliraya Re-Creation Center in Lumbao, Laguna. It was a lake on a mountain away from the noise of urban Cavite and Laguna. It actually reminded me of a dreamy summer camp except the atmosphere was rain and fog.
The 2nd Luzon Rizal Youth Leadership Institute (LRYLI) took place at this venue with representatives from as far north as Abra and as far south as Bicol. Our delegation of over fifty from DLSU-D composed a third of all the delegates that showed up. Within the fifty from DLSU-D, I was part of the largest group since CLASC had 16 EB/LB members.
Anyways, it was a four-day affair where I mixed with other student leaders in Luzon. I never expected I would be given an opportunity to go to something like this. I was DLSU-D's representative in the Essay Writing Contest, I didn't win though. Bajet, our CLASC president, won the top prize in the Extempo while the "DLSU-D Student Leaders Chorus" (something we all just made up while there) won 3rd Place in the Makabayan Song competition.
I was not part of any of the groupings or commissions, instead I was assigned to be part of the Publication staff. It's a tradition in these conferences that a group of student leaders will be set aside to compose a newsletter for everyone. I met up with three girls from De La Salle - Lipa and a guy from the Philippine Military Academy.
I felt frustrated to be doing publication work while my colleagues in the CLASC where out having fun from mud sliding to kayaking. I had thought going to this conference was a way to escape the work back at school, instead it was more work.
In the end though it was about observing the traditions of the institute. Though I did not find the ratings-building and backstabbing attitude some of the organizers possessed, I did have fun meeting up with fellow Lasallians from Lipa as well as admiring someone from the UE delegation. (hehe)
* The fifty plus delegates from DLSU-D are from the different college student councils (EB and LB).
* In December, the 43rd National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute will take place in Baguio City with DLSU-D being represented by the USC (which includes of course my friend Mark Panizales)
